Dan Cnossen’s Rise Through the Ranks
Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Dan always dreamed of serving his country, leading him to the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy and eventually to the elite ranks of the Navy SEALs.In 2003, Dan was among only 16 students in his class invited to join the officer program of the highly respected BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL). It’s widely known as one of the most difficult military training programs in the world, but Dan pushed through with grit and determination. He successfully completed the program in the fall of 2003, which jumpstarted his military career. For the next six years, Dan served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He served in multiple deployments and rose in the ranks to eventually become the officer-in-charge of an 18-man SEAL platoon. But in 2009, everything changed. During a mission in Afghanistan, Dan stepped on an IED and lost both of his legs. Dan was later awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor for his service in combat.
Turning Adversity into Triumph
While Dan was faced with a life-altering injury, his resilience only grew stronger. He spent the next two years recovering and endured more than 40 surgeries and endless hours of rehab.Dan works through hours of rehab.
But, Dan never gave up or lost hope. It was during this recovery that he would find a new purpose. He discovered cross-country skiing and biathlon - sports that would not only become his passion but also his path to a new chapter in life.

A Paralympic Journey of Excellence
By 2014, Dan earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Team, competing at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games. However, it was at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang where he truly made his mark.Winning gold in the 7.5km Sitting event, alongside four silver and one bronze medal, he demonstrated incredible skill and resilience. His performance was so remarkable that he was named Best Male Athlete of the Games.

Dan continued his Paralympic journey at the 2022 Winter Games in Bejing, adding another gold medal to his collection in the 4 × 2.5km Mixed Relay. With his triumphs, he became one of the most decorated American Paralympic athletes, and the first American male to win a gold medal in a biathlon event.
An Athlete Mentor’s Impact - Reaching Thousands Through Classroom Champions
Beyond the medals, Dan’s story is one of resilience and heart. His journey from Navy SEAL to Paralympic champion has inspired countless people along the way. In 2022, Dan was recognized by P&G for serving his community off the field of play through the Athletes for Good Program. These awards recognize the accomplishments and charitable work of Olympians, Paralympians, and Hopefuls.

Proctor & Gamble awards 2 of 7 grants to Classroom ChampionsDan dedicated his grant winnings to Classroom Champions. This grant enabled 3,200 additional students to participate in the Classroom Champions program. Through Classroom Champions, Dan shares his personal experiences with his mentees. He inspires his classrooms with his tale of resilience and helps them understand that perseverance is not just about personal grit, but also about leaning on the support of those around you. He encourages students to embrace their own challenges and recognize that they are never alone on their journeys. With Dan as their Athlete Mentor, students learn that every obstacle can be transformed into an opportunity for growth.
