Dan Cnossen’s Rise Through the Ranks

Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Dan always dreamed of serving his country, leading him to the prestigious U.S. Naval Academy and eventually to the elite ranks of the Navy SEALs.
In 2003, Dan was among only 16 students in his class invited to join the officer program of the highly respected BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL). It’s widely known as one of the most difficult military training programs in the world, but Dan pushed through with grit and determination. He successfully completed the program in the fall of 2003, which jumpstarted his military career. For the next six years, Dan served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He served in multiple deployments and rose in the ranks to eventually become the officer-in-charge of an 18-man SEAL platoon. But in 2009, everything changed. During a mission in Afghanistan, Dan stepped on an IED and lost both of his legs. Dan was later awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor for his service in combat.

Turning Adversity into Triumph

While Dan was faced with a life-altering injury, his resilience only grew stronger. He spent the next two years recovering and endured more than 40 surgeries and endless hours of rehab.

But, Dan never gave up or lost hope. It was during this recovery that he would find a new purpose. He discovered cross-country skiing and biathlon - sports that would not only become his passion but also his path to a new chapter in life.

A Paralympic Journey of Excellence

By 2014, Dan earned a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Team, competing at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games. However, it was at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang where he truly made his mark.
Winning gold in the 7.5km Sitting event, alongside four silver and one bronze medal, he demonstrated incredible skill and resilience. His performance was so remarkable that he was named Best Male Athlete of the Games.
